Centro Ceremonial Kuntur Wasi
A 93 km al noreste de la ciudad de Cajamarca (3 horas en auto).
Centro ceremonial prehispánico cuya antigüedad se remonta a 1100 a.C. Se levanta sobre una serie de plataformas y plazas superpuestas y existen varios recintos y edificaciones que se sostienen con muros de piedra de gran tamaño.
En el lugar se han podido identificar diferentes momentos de ocupación. Alrededor del año 700 a.C. ocurrió un gran cambio cultural y el complejo fue totalmente cubierto por tierra y piedras por los mismos habitantes, para construir un nuevo complejo ceremonial de mayores dimensiones. Hacia el año 250 a.C., el centro ceremonial sufrió una gran destrucción y el sitio fue abandonado. El centro social se trasladó al sitio Cerro Blanco, donde se encuentran varias construcciones de esta época. Después de la destrucción, Kuntur Wasi no volvió a ser ocupado jamás.
Desde 1988, la misión arqueológica de la Universidad de Tokio y grupos comunales de la zona vienen estudiando la tradición cultural reflejada en Kuntur Wasi. Entre los más importantes hallazgos se encuentran los entierros, formados por cadáveres cubiertos con colorantes rojos y rodeados de ofrendas y objetos diversos.

Muestra permanente de los objetos de oro, piedras semi-preciosas, cerámica, restos líticos y óseos hallados en las excavaciones de Kuntur Wasi. Además, se pueden ver los mapas, planos y fotografías de los trabajos de investigación realizados por la Universidad de Tokio. Se ubica en la cima del cerro La Copa, a 2273 msnm. |

This pre-Hispanic ceremonial center, which is estimated to have been built around 1100 B.C., is raised upon a series of platforms and superimposed plazas with various other buildings and rooms held up by massive stone walls.
Studies have discovered different epochs of occupation. Around 700 B.C., there was a great cultural change and the entire structure was covered with dirt and stones by its own inhabitants so they could build a new, larger ceremonial center. Towards 250 B.C., the center suffered substantial destruction, and the site was abandoned. The society moved to the hill, Cerro Blanco, where a variety of Wari constructions from this time still remain. After the destruction, Kuntur Wasi was never used again.
The archeological mission of the University of Tokyo and local community groups began studying the cultural tradition reflected in Kuntur Wasi in 1988. Among the most important discoveries are the dead buried there, bodies clothed in bright red and surrounded by offerings and other objects.
